With its pristine white coat and large, round eyes, the baby seal is one of the most endearing marine animals. It is found primarily on ice floes and Arctic beaches, where it spends its first weeks snuggled up to its mother.
Surprisingly, this light-colored coat, which allows it to camouflage itself in the snow, is only temporary. As it grows, the young seal molts and adopts a darker coat, better suited to aquatic life. During its first days, it is fed milk very rich in fat, which allows it to grow quickly and build up a thick layer of protective fat against the cold.
